The Importance of Letting Go

Many of you are sharing the journey of a huge transition with me. I've been open about how my journey started three years ago in preparation for what's ahead of me this
 year. My only wee one
graduates from high school then prepares to go away to college.  It's funny how .that saying "in the blink of an eye" is so true. I can remember my life before Maui, when he was born, and all the seventeen fabulous years that lead us to this moment.  As an older parent, I chose to step back from my business career and face mommy hood head on. I have no regrets because I had deal with God. For years, I travelled overseas alone and worked my business. I flew so much that I was a medallion member with two airlines and the flight attendants knew me. I prayed for years to have one child and I told God that if I could have one healthy, smart, kind at heart beautiful child I would raise it to know God and I would help it realize the gifts and talents that it was given.  Both God and I have kept our promise.  Maui is shaping up to be an outstanding young man armed with faith, a good head on his shoulders, and a kind heart toward others.

These chapters we have written together are filled with memories that we often talk and laugh about. We definitely wrote them with colored gel pens and glitter. Seventeen years have flown by so fast, just like my daddy used to say "Young un, don't be in such a hurry, when you get older, time gets shorter." The wisdom of my daddy watching me from heaven rings so true.

This personal journey of transition is not only mine but it is my son's as well. We both face the future with excitement and apprehension. I have planted so many seeds in his mind and heart through the years that as a parent, it's fun to now see some of them sprout. We both are discovering who we are as we near the end of these chapters.  I tell him that the foundation will always be there but some things change as we reach our goals or outgrow our thoughts and ideas. For me and many of you who are going through transition it's a matter of moving forward and reconnecting with dreams and goals that have been shelved. Or, it could be a matter of discovering the possibility of which path you choose. I've found myself full of many emotions from being proud of both my son's and my accomplishments as a team in growth to crying because the end is almost here. I stop myself and realize that while these pages are just about full, there are so many more yet to fill.

When we seek "living with zen," the whole point is seeking harmony and tranquility between our mind, body and spirit allowing ourselves to live life to the fullest. We can't begin to do that if we're holding so tightly to the past. Our past is part of our present and future as it is part of our foundation. However, without closing those chapters when the pages are full, we never grow to our best potential. Maui and I will be celebrating each first, last and in between of senior year.  Then we'll get the colored gel pens and glitter out for the next chapters.  I hope you'll join us and do the same.
